Dear Reader,
For a long time now I have been very interested in the medical field. It started with watching shows on TV about hospitals and doctors. From there, my fascination, as well as my understanding grew. After reading Angels of the ER and Intern Blues, I realized how great our current healthcare is. That made me wonder what will be changing with our current healthcare when ObamaCare goes into full affect. In the recent election, healthcare was mentioned countless times, with countless answers to the common questions about the new healthcare. Healthcare seemed like an interesting topic that interested me, as well as people wanting to know about our future.
Before this research paper, all I knew about ObamaCare was that my parents were against it because it would cost them a lot more money than they wanted to be giving to ObamaCare. I also knew that Canada has a very similar healthcare as ObamaCare and that my Canadian relatives believe that our current healthcare is better than theirs. On the healthcare side, I had no idea about the costs or anything. Through the TV shows I watched and books I read, I knew mostly about the procedures and experiences of working as a doctor, rather than the overall healthcare aspect.
My research question changed around as my paper and research evolved. My first research question was focusing on how ObamaCare will affect the hospital emergency rooms. As I gained research, I realized that there was little to no information on the specific changes of the emergency room. My next research question, focusing on how ObamaCare will affect the entire United States, was a little too broad for my research paper. Finally, I landed on my final, and current, research question. What is ObamaCare and how will it change our current healthcare? I believe that this is a strong research question because it has enough depth to be written about for an entire research paper. Also, my research question will keep the reader, as well as the writer entertained throughout the whole paper.
The sources that went into my paper were mostly from the internet, other than my two reading books. When researching on Google, I used phrases like “ObamaCare’s impact on current healthcare” or “ObamaCare information”. I also used a lot of ProQuest, which came up with some of the main articles I used in my paper. My process of writing the paper was to research first. I found all my websites, articles, etc. Then, I went through all of my sources and highlighted useful information, quotes, facts, and statistics. I then created an outline of my paper with details on what I wanted to talk about in each of my paragraphs. Finally I wrote my paper. Finding my sources was difficult to figure out what I wanted to use and not, but by spending time and using my outline, it was possible.
Before my paper, I didn’t know much about ObamaCare. I had the opinions of my parents, and the experiences of Canada’s healthcare. Through my research, I learned that ObamaCare is going to be a very long and excruciating process. I leaned that although ObamaCare is planning on costing less, the current projections for costs are from the same as our current cost ($9,000) all the way up to ($30,000). ObabaCare’s goal is to help the less fortunate with healthcare, but in the process it will make healthcare more difficult for the wealthy citizens of America. Amerca has never done a healthcare like this so no one knows exactly how it will go. Right now, we will have to wait and see just how the cookie crumbles.
This project was the first real research paper I’ve ever done. As you could imagine, it was difficult, this being the first time doing all of this. I feel that we should have been given a class or something before just being thrown into this project not knowing really how to do most of these assignments. I liked that each student got to choose what we wanted to research about. That made it more enjoyable than just writing about something that didn’t interest us at all. I feel like my class really learned how to write research papers on our own.
If I had to do this project again, I would not do many things differently. Although I paced my work, I still felt rushed towards the due date. Looking back, I should have set due dates for myself for parts of my paper. Throughout the paper, I felt organized because I had folders and notebooks dedicated for my research paper. In the future, I think the teacher should set more due dates for parts of the paper. For example: outlines, annotated sources, intro/conclusion paragraphs.
My research helps readers understand more about ObamaCare and the way it will change our current healthcare. My research will help people to better understand what ObamaCare is. With our government, it is hard to know what is true and what is exaggerated. With my research, the facts are clear, basic, and understandable. My research changed how I thought of ObamaCare. I learned that it will actually cost more money, lessen the skill of care, and improve the amount of people with healthcare. I am proud of the conclusions that I have come to through my research, as well as my research paper overall.
Sincerely,
Nicole Blanck
